Estonian for beginners/ Eesti keel algajatele

Have you recently moved to Estonia? Or have you already lived here for a while and would like to feel more included in everyday life? Do your kids learn Estonian at school and you want to level up with them? Perhaps you are working for an Estonian company and you are unsure how to handle the notorious “Kuidas läheb?” question?

Join our beginner-friendly Estonian language course in Tallinn Old Town with teacher Sandra and build your confidence step by step.

The course is a follow-up course to the course that started in February 2026. It is suitable for those who have little knowledge of Estonian. First half of the textbook has been completed.

Course is intended for those who have some previous knowledge of Estonian. It develops all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The textbook used in the class is Tere! (I. Mangus, M. Simmul 2015). Additional materials (e.g. Keeleklikk) are also used.

The overall aim of this course is to enable the learner to manage in everyday language situations.

Content of the course:

Topics:

  • travel and transport
  • talk about one’s day
  • food and beverages

Grammar:

Locative cases, infinitives, simple past, imperative mood, abessive and essive case, adjectives.

Learning outcomes:

  • will be able to buy train and bus tickets;
  • able to talk about one’s day in present and past form.
  • order food and beverages in cafes and restaurants;

Scope of the course is 21 academic contact hours with 20 hours of additional independent work.

Assessment criteria is in the form of conversations, oral and written translations, weekly preparation of conversation topics and written grammar exercises. Minimum attendance rate of 75% is needed to complete the course.

Upon request a certificate is awarded for successful completion of the course.
